Nordland Railway

Operating between Trondheim and Bodø, Norway

Description

Nordland Line

“At 729km and taking almost ten hours, the Nordland line is Norway's longest single train journey. The railway crosses 293 bridges, ploughs through 154 tunnels and crosses the Arctic circle on its epic journey northwards from Trondheim to Bodø.

Known in Norwegian as Nordlandsbanen, the route still provides a glimpse into rural Norwegian life as it meanders its way north through industrial towns and small villages and past an ever-changing landscape.

It crosses the Arctic Circle on the journey, adding a certain allure to the route for international travellers.”

Chip’s Notes

The Nordline is a beauty of a train. At eight hours in length we paid the extra $50 each to sit in premium class. The extra money is worth it if you have it. The seats recline almost horizontally. You are delivered 3 feet between you and the nearest seat. Windows are large, the coaches themselves as clean as operating rooms, which is normal in Norway.

This is simply a fine way to travel the country’s rugged mountains and valleys if you want to make it to the arctic circle. Please read about the whole experience from Day 620 of the Vagabond Journal.
