Saltstraumen Maelstrom

Located near Bodø, Norway

Description

The Saltstraumen Maelstrom as seen from below the Saltstraumen bridge.

Sometimes called the “hourglass of the universe,” the Saltstraumen Maelstrom is the strongest tidal current in the world. Water from Saltenfjorden and Skjerstadfjorden fjords conflict in an impressive display of natural forces.

Four times per day, every six hours, the tide moves in and out along this waterway 150 meter-wide channel. At its strongest, this flow moves at up to 20 knots, creating whirlpools 10 meters in diameter and 5 meters deep.

There are many good viewpoints along the shore, some accessible by wheelchair. Preferable locations vary based on the direction of flow.

For swimmers, snorkeling, when accompanied by a guide, is a safe way to experience the remarkable marine life in this channel. And those with advanced diving skills can get a unique experience of the maelstrom.

Chip’s Notes

We didn’t get to experience this location ourselves. But it comes highly recommended from some of our fellow Vagabonds and wanted to relay the idea if you get a chance to visit the Bodø area. For the best experience, visitors will want to arrive when the tides are highest, during New or Full Moons. See this calendar to plan your arrival.
