Chip’s Notes

Our vessel was Roald Amundsen, a 2019 vessel built in Norway. It’s named after the famed Norwegian explorer and first to reach the South Pole. Read about the Vagabond Adventure’s own expedition to Antarctica, starting here. Hurtigruten knows what it is doing. Its roots are in Norway, but it has been expanding around the world and still feeling its way in the Caribbean, South America and Antarctica. What I like about organization is its dedication to quality, excellent staffing and its desire to reach places not as obvious as the huge Princess and Disney style ships. This looks for locations off the beaten path and does it with a ship that holds a few hundred passengers rather than thousands.

For me this was really only part one of a journey I made on the ship all the way to Lima, Peru. The first 10 days took me from Miami to Colon, Panama. Many people debarked there, but the next day the ship began its next leg to Peru over the next 8 days and I remained there throughout. Some passengers travelled pole-to-pole on this ship, from the Arctic to Antarctica.
