Bhutan Heartland

A muli-roofed building on a winding river's edge sits below some mountains in Bhutan's Heartland

Hello from Bhutan! Our route has carried us from Paro to the capital, Thimphu, through the lush, serene terraces of Punakha and the mist-filled hills of Wangdue Phodrang. It’s all a step back in time. Each turn reveals prayer flags fluttering over deep valleys and villages perched along cliff edges.

We continued east into Trongsa, the great gateway between Bhutan’s regions, where its massive dzong (fort) clings to the mountainside. From there, the road curled into Bumthang—Bhutan’s spiritual core—and its ancient temples, yak pastures, and crisp pine forests. Mountains upon mountains.

Mongar and Trashigang are small charming towns with bright markets, warm smiles, and winding mountain passes that took us 16,000 feet closer to the clouds. Our final stop in Bhutan is Samdrup Jongkhar, where the pace slows and the forest thickens to jungle as we near the border and sea level.
